A beautifully smooth and creamy no refined sugar hot chocolate, that is full of healthy ingredients and is vegan too when made with a plant based milk!
I find I feel at my best, and healthiest, when I eat a wholefoods plant based diet, and although things like processed vegan cheeses, meat substitutes and really sugary baked goods suck me in fairly often, after eating them I am soon reminded that they make me feel a bit yucky. I love food far too much to ever deprive myself of anything though, so I try and make versions of all my favourite foods that taste just as good, but are full of good stuff to help me feel awesome too – and this hot chocolate does just that!
Now the nights are getting colder, I am really craving hot drinks and warming, stodgy food. I was playing about with my blender the other week and made this hot chocolate – hubby and the girls absolutely loved it and have asked for me to make it loads since, so I think it’s a winner!
If you use a sweetened milk, you can probably use less liquid sweetener. I’ve given a guideline, but just add the liquid sweetener to your taste – you can just use extra liquid sweetener in a pinch if you don’t have dates, but try it with if you can as it thickens it wonderfully and dates are full of goodness!). Soak the dates in warm water for 20 minutes before blending if you don’t have a very powerful blender, I don’t want to be blamed for broken blenders 🙂
Let me know what you think if you give it a try! L x
No Refined Sugar Hot Chocolate
- 2 teaspoons raw cacao powder
- 2 medjool dates (or 5 regular dates)
- 3 cups plant milk (I tend to use soya or almond)
- Few drops vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons agave nectar or maple syrup
- Add all items to a blender and blend until super smooth.
- Heat through, and serve (with lots of biscuits for dunking!)
